Creating a feed

How products, offerings, feeds, pricing plans, and packages fit together.

1. Products, offerings, feeds, and packages

Five concepts work together on pkgstore:

  • Product: the top-level thing you distribute. It owns the listing page and groups offerings.
  • Offering: how the product is presented or sold. The offering type is Basic Listing, Marketplace Feed, or Private Feed.
  • Feed: the NuGet feed behind a Marketplace Feed or Private Feed. Consumers point their NuGet client at its URL.
  • Pricing plan: a purchasable monthly or yearly plan on a Marketplace Feed. Plans can include seat counts and support tier labels.
  • Package: a package id and version pushed into a feed.

A product can hold more than one offering, but a Basic Listing and Marketplace Feed cannot exist on the same product. Use a Basic Listing when checkout and hosting happen elsewhere. Use a Marketplace Feed when pkgstore hosts the packages and sells feed access.

2. Product types compared

Basic Listing Marketplace Feed Private feed
Best for Promoting an external product URL Selling hosted NuGet feed access publicly Internal teams, direct customers
Feed No pkgstore feed Hosted by pkgstore Hosted by pkgstore
Access model Handled outside pkgstore Granted automatically after checkout Credentials you create or grant
Payments External URL, display price only Stripe checkout through pkgstore None required
Review Admin validation before public listing Admin validation before purchase Not listed publicly
Per product Cannot coexist with a Marketplace Feed Cannot coexist with a Basic Listing Can be used for direct sharing

Rule of thumb: use a Basic Listing to send buyers to an external site, a Private Feed to share directly with people you know, and a Marketplace Feed when customers should buy and receive feed access through pkgstore.

For the full business model, including admin review and subscriptions, see How pkgstore works.

3. Slugs and the feed URL

Your publisher slug and product slug combine into the feed URL that consumers use for feed-backed offerings:

https://www.pkgstore.io/api/nuget/{publisherSlug}/{productSlug}/index.json

The feed slug is immutable once the feed is created. Pick something stable and descriptive, because changing it later would break every consumer's configuration.

4. Packages, versions, and analytics

Every time you push, pkgstore records the package id, version, and metadata, and lists it on your product page. Pushing a new version keeps the old ones available, so consumers can pin to a specific version. From the feed management page you can see download counts, version counts, and when each package was last published. Publishers can delete packages or specific versions from the management page.
